Geo-Crises: From Knowledge to Action
Territoriality is today increasingly less tied to geographic locations, but instead manifests as a multifaceted phenomenon in which national and power-political demands play a similar role to international financial flows, technical infrastructure as well as mass media attention. The technologies of communication and the mobility of information create a new, globally effective territorial order. The instabilities of this new order might not be best described as crises but show the functional limits of a system which had been successfully operating for several centuries. New critical methods and strategies for the analysis and design of the current situation are thus required.
Marko Peljhan is a conceptual artist and activist who works with the interfaces of art, technology and science. He coordinates the activities of I-TASC and teaches at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Peljhan’s latest projects are currently on show in the Hartware MedienKunstVerein exhibition Arctic Perspective, in Dortmund.
Harald Welzer is a sociologist and social psychologist. He is head of the Center for Interdisciplinary Memory Research in Essen and research professor for social psychology at the University of Witten-Herdecke. He works on memory cultures and the psychology of the holocaust and violence.
