Curating Youtube Box [CYB]
Curating Youtube Box [CYB] is a temporary infrastructure for an exhibition space reacting to contemporary WEB 2.0 phenomena such as user generated content. CYB includes the hardware needed to stream movies via the Internet and the (temporary) exhibition environment these movies are presented in. The individual CYB exhibitions are managed via a web interface, allowing organizers/curators to remotely access the CYB. Individuals partaking in the project have the opportunity to curate a version of the exhibition. Thus, the statement everybody is an artist may be verified by means of the CYB.

YouTube Favorites = Media Masters
YouTube, as cultural reservoir and visual archive of moving images, accommodates the whole range of visualising creative processes – from artistic finger exercises to fine arts. Most YouTube users stay within the given media structures. They do not program, yet still new aesthetics emerge and what is most important the users act one hundred percent media literate! YouTube clips would never be a substitution or be an exchange for classic media art, but they are a supplement, a marginal but important fresh addition and revitalisation of art.

Marion Walton (za)
Mobile Republic. Visual Approaches to Discourse in South African Mobile Social Networks
A new generation of South African Internet users network online via net-enabled phones. Mobile networking (both public and intimate) has the potential to reshape South African public discourse and change the social fabric, and mobile-centric internet allows connections with broader mediated publics. Mobile social interactions are often digitally invisible because of users financial constraints as well as platform architectures. Visualisations of mobile social networks and Internet use suggest the kinds of mediated conversations and networking currently taking place.
Marion Walton is a senior lecturer in the Centre for Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Her research confronts the issues of power and regulation of meaning for software users, particularly those in marginalized contexts.
