A New Colour Palette as Digitally Controlled Woven Light

This paper highlights research focussed on establishing groundbreaking, light-emitting textiles within the context of design at the technology interface. It will discuss the development of woven fabric utilizing optical fibre and paper yarn and the processes involved in exploiting lighting effects in conjunction with laser technology and colour through the use of computerized replay systems. It will highlight key results as showcased in an exhibit for a major exhibition, which promoted the concept of programmable textiles exploring the possibilities of time-based colour as light by the artist.

Sarah Taylor is Reader within the School of Architecture & Design at the University of Brighton. Her areas of enquiry have pioneered the creation of light-emitting textiles which exploit the visual and mechanical properties of optical fibres as interactive, multisensory textile-based artwork.

Wind Space Architecture,Transmission and Sonic Mass. The Turbulence Sound Matrix and FLEX

FLEX (2010/11) is a new audio installation system derived from the TSM – Turbulence Sound Matrix (2008) and it's Wind Space Architecture software. FLEX is a portable, location flexible, 64 channel audio diffusion system for site specific installations, where speakers, using a 64 position proportional and expandable grid matrix, can be installed in almost any location on armatures in situ. Heimbecker's coloured hearing compositions are locative and meditative, using sound sources of exceptional depth, tone and texture to create immersive, diffuse, and captivating sonic experiences.

Steve Heimbecker, Montréal, CA., has been creating immersive audio art compositions and installations internationally since the mid 1980s. His work is based upon the discretization of signal, multichannel sound design and transmission, kinetic energy, nature, and cross modal synaesthetic perception.

Pulsation of City. Interactive Flying Ball Installation

The work is structured by 2 lines of transparent tubes. Two lines form a alleyway whose height is 2.8 metres, width is about 0.8 to 1 metre and length is more than 10 metres. When the audience walks in the alley, the balls in the tubes would fly up and down. The work tries to convert graphic images into real moving objects in three-dimensional space, allowing audiences to experience a great visual impact of virtual anti-gravity physical space.
